Raise The Banner

During Jesus' last hours on earth He warned His beloved friends and followers to "watch and pray". With Easter morning drawing near and its' obvious proclamation of truth about Jesus' resurrection from the dead and subsequent re-exaltation after His condescension to earth, the devil must not be happy at all! He's lost forever and he knows it!

However, even though Jesus knew exactly what He was about to accomplish in redeeming us from sin, the fear of death, and the dominion of the devil, told them to "Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Peter, a man who told Jesus "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You" did hours later deny he ever knew Him. Scripture tells us, Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!"

Following the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, Peter, had the Holy Spirit now living inside of Him (The Spirit of Jesus Christ), and a whole new life and boldness from the sorrowful lesson learned earlier, and he is found saying "Be of sober spirit, be on the alert Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." How true!

Paul, the apostle of Jesus Christ says it this way, "...for a wide door for effective service has opened to me, and there are many adversaries."

In approaching the morning in which many who do NOT regularly attend church will be in church with the saints, and their eternal souls stand in the mix waiting their judgment and eternity, perhaps between the blink of an eye or heartbeat, and a "wide door for effective service" is "opened to me", and also the chance for souls to worship, repent, believe, and or be saved, there will be many adversaries!

Now I here the words of Christ to "keep watching and praying" and of Peter, "to be of sober spirit", and "to be on the alert", because our adversary the devil is also seeking to devour some souls and ruin any "wide door for effective service...opened to me". May the Lord Jesus Christ rebuke him, keep him powerless as he is before the King of kings and Lord of lords Jesus Christ! May the power, the resurrection power which is Christ's be glorified in my varied weaknesses and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven! Amen. Amen.

He is Risen!

WHO IS JESUS?

Truth for Today: Everyone has an opinion of who Jesus is. Some are right and some are wrong.

My Goal This Week: To prayerfully prepare myself to know Jesus more personally.

Today's Scripture

Once when Jesus was praying in private and His disciples were with Him, He asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"

They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life." "But what about you?" He asked. "Who do you say I am?"

Peter answered, "The Christ of God." (Luke 9:18—20, NIV)

Who do the crowds say I am?

· Judaism claims that Jesus was “a child of God in the sense that we are all God’s children.” Jews reject Him as the Messiah, a Prophet, and the Savior. Jews claim that “one person cannot die for the sins of another.” “Jews believe that God is God, and humans are human, and God does not become human, and humans do not become God.”

· Islam claims that Jesus is one of God’s many prophets. They do not believe that He is God’s only Son. Islam rejects that He was crucified and died on the cross to atone for our sins.

· The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints claims that Jesus is the brother of Lucifer or Satan. He became a “god” but was not God. Mormons reject Jesus being born of a virgin birth.

· Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that Jesus was created billions of years ago, and is the Archangel Michael. They claim that Jesus is “a” mighty god, but not God Almighty. They claim that He is not God like the Father, nor to be worshipped as the Father. They claim that Jesus was raised from the dead as in invisible spirit creature with no physical body.

· Masonry claims that Jesus was an enlightened man, although not deity. Some refer to Him as “the greatest of all Spiritual Masons.” Masonry deletes the name of Jesus Christ when the ritual cites biblical passages. Masonry prohibits the Christian from talking about Christ in any fashion in the lodge.

· Christian Science claims that Jesus is the human man and Christ is the divine idea. The virgin mother conceived this idea of God and gave to her ideal the name of Jesus. There is no sin, and no need of a Savior.

· Scientology claims that Jesus Christ was just another nice guy who unfortunately was wrongfully put to death and whose story ends there.

· The Church of Oprah or The Gospel According to Oprah claims that Jesus or “the man on the cross is an archetypal image. He is every man and every woman.” “Jesus, can’t possibly be the only way to God.”

· Unitarianism claims that Jesus is one of the greatest religious teachers, but refuses to “make a God of one who was so utterly human.”

· Roman Catholicism claims that Jesus is the Son of God and our Lord and Savior, but attributes to Mary the “position as Co-Redemptrix and Mediatrix of all graces...Nobody can approach Christ except through the mother.”

On the Passing of our dear friend, Corine Hathaway

A Tribute to a Friend, Mentor and Church Mother

Corine Hathaway was the most devoted Christian woman that I had ever met. I first met Corine as she sat up front to be by her husband, Dave, while he preached at Northwood Community Bible Church. I got to see how she supported her husbands ministry and then how she stood by him during his cancer then saw the grief she experienced after his passing.

As Tom mentioned at her Memorial Service, she could have given up then but kept on serving, kept on teaching, kept on being faithful, sometimes wondering where God was in her head but knowing in her heart he was always there.

Corine was faithful in church attendance, even in the deepest of grief and her own illness she would still play the piano. She only missed church once or twice a year and only while she was gone to see her son, daughter or dear friends the Prensners.

Corine was faithful in her ministry responsibilities, she taught piano to many students, helped children and adults learn to sing, helped with CEF and KOF teachings to our local children and taught bible studies numerous times. A group of us went through the book of Revelation and Corine was so thorough that it was over a year later when we were done. She was teaching Linda how to lead a bible study, started Zach and Katlyn in a love for music at a very young age, spent time teaching Vange, Marissa and me how to make home-made bread (tried to teach us-ha). Her home was open to all, they specifically set up their basement so the missionaries that came to town could have a place to stay and later to help Nancy after the tornado.

I got to know many people from the church when Jen invited me over then Corine started having me over and each Sunday was a meal at Corines with hours of fellowship and prayer. Corine also hosted a mens breakfast for years, cooking them a breakfast and allowing them to fellowship in her home while she served.

Corine was a wonderful blessing to many and certainly not to be taken for granted in this age of "casual commitment."

Corine was always a wonderful 'mother' figure to many in the church. She would take the time to talk with me and even Nikki or Katlyn when they looked for advice or prayer. Both Jonathan and Wynnie Lea said that they were thankful for her numerous friends and church family, that these people could all check on Corine, get her to her appointments, read the bible with her, pray ect while she was a widow then going through her illness.

These are some of my memories since I started coming to NCBC and I know there is a whole life long story that I'm missing about Corine and her service. I know it's worth noting that her whole life was placed in God's hands, faithfully following his lead to unknown places and situations, keeping her protected in each situation. It is worth noting that she waited 38 years to purely give herself to her husband, Dave. Finding a man that also wanted to serve the Lord, starting churches and leading choir's and studies.

One of the last memories that I'll hold so dear is her heart for the unsaved, one being my husband. She told me one day that she was reading a book about grief and sorrows and it said not to waste your tears on yourself in self pity but to cry for someone that was lost and in need of Jesus and she shared with me that she cried her tears for Brian. She took the time to pray for him and reach out to us as a family and because of that Brian saw her heart and knowing she was a widow, he helped any time he could and respected her dearly.

Thank you Corine and may you sing to the Lord in great peace and joy for eternity.

THE PROMISE OF FORGIVENESS

HOW YOU CAN FORGIVE AND KEEP ON FORGIVING

1. Make a decision to forgive.

2. Say the words "I forgive you."

3. When you forgive, release them.

4. Forgive them completely.

5. Forgive them repeatedly.

LOVE DARE CHALLENGE

Ask God to reveal anything you have done to hurt or offend Him, your spouse, or others. Seek forgiveness and reconciliation. Remember not to blame shift or make excuses. Ask God to reveal anything you need to forgive in your spouse or others. Ask God to help you forgive any deep-seated hurts. Prayerfully consider how to communicate your forgiveness to your spouse and others,

FIREPROOF YOUR MARRIAGE

He First Loved Us

(1 John 4:7—19)

Our Goal This Week:

To experience God's love personally, and to reflect God's love to others.

Truth for Today:

If we are going to truly love others, we must first know and experience the love of Jesus Christ ourselves! As followers of Jesus Christ in this world we are to be like Him. But how do we do that unless we ourselves are comforted and at peace with God and His love for us? When we experience the love of Christ personally, we are overwhelmed. We are then able to freely give that which we have freely received (free to us). We can't give what we don't have to give!

FIVE PRINCIPLES of RELATIONSHIPS

(Read 1 John 4:7—19 )

1. WHEN PEOPLE HAVE PROFOUND EXPERIENCES, THEY WANT TO SHARE THEM.

Read 1 John 4:12

This is obvious. If you see a great hockey game you share it with others. If you take an awesome vacation, you share it with others. If you read a great book, you share it with others. Rarely do we hold it in when we experience something great and fantastic, or something awesome happens to us. We are worshipers who are meant to be WOWED! And when we are wowed we proclaim and declare and share it!

2. AN ENCOUNTER WITH GOD'S LOVE IS A PROFOUND EXPERIENCE.

Read 1 John 4:9—10
Read John 3:16
Read Romans 5:5

The word profound means "deep" or "not superficial" or "penetrating". In each of these passages, God's love does something profound for the believer. In one case it is said to give "life" and an "atoning sacrifice for our sins". In another case "laying down His life for ours.". And in the third case "hope that does not disappoint". Our receiving God's love is profound!

3 . THOSE WHO LIVE CLOSE TO GOD FIND THAT THEIR LOVE FOR OTHERS IS ALWAYS INCREASING.

Read 1 Thessalonians 4:9

Everyone who loves has been born of God. The one who does not love does not know God. Why? Because God is love. The closer and better we know God through daily fellowship in His Word and prayer effects us. The Scripture says that we are being changed or transformed more and more and more and more into His likeness. And if He is love, then the more closely we commune with God, the more we love.

4. LOVE ELIMINATES FEAR.

Read 1 John 4:16—18

Read Romans 8:31

Fear is the result of perceived or real negative consequences. No marriage can grow, or be "FIREPROOF" with fear. There is no fear in love, in fact love casts out or gets rid of fear. When we are loved by our spouse, we do not fear. And if we are becoming more like Christ as we become closer to Him, then are relationships are less fearful and more rewarding for us and others. Marriage must be based upon God's love, not ours. Our love wanes, fades, changes, is hot and cold. But God's love is constant and secure. When we love each other with this love our spouse should be forever knowing that they are constantly and securely loved!

5. WE LOVE BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED US.

Read 1 John 4:19—21

We cannot give what we do not have! When we receive God's love we are then able to love. Without His love in our hearts, we cannot possible expect to truly love. There are many who say that they are "in love", but they are also "out of love" sometime later. Human love is blind. God's love is based upon seeing and loving still. When human love sees flaws, human love fails. When God chooses to love us, He loves us seeing and knowing all about us, and His love never fails. Jesus Christ proved that!

Be a Doer of God's Word, Not Only a Hearer: Application of truth is what changes hearts and changes lives. Don't be guilty of knowing the right thing to do and not doing it. Give all your effort this week to remember God's love to you in Jesus Christ and then in turn love Him and love your spouse and friends, co-workers, and friends like God!

LOVE DARE TO HUSBANDS: Every day this week, ask the Lord Jesus to show you one way to love your wife, then do it.

LOVE DARE TO WIVES: Every day this week, ask the Lord to show you one way to love your husband, and then do it.

LOVE DARE TO SINGLES: Make a list of 6 family members, friends, or co-workers and assign a day to each of them. Then, every day this week, ask the Lord to show you one way to love the person of the day, then do it.

Greetings and Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

This last Sunday we began a series titled "Fireproof Your Marriage" based upon the box office hit movie "Fireproof". Our first week focused on men and women learning to appreciate the differences between men and women. Men need respect and women need love. That doesn't mean the men don't need love and women don't need respect, but it does mean that mean primarily need to be respected by the one that matters most, their wives, and women need primarily need to be loved by the one that matters most, their husbands.

Love includes respect and respect includes love. Here are some thoughts for you:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

Jesus had a plan when entering the world. He came to seek and to save the lost, and to give His life as a ransom for many. He also gave His followers specific instructions before leaving earth and returning to heaven and His throne. They were simple: you will be My witnesses, go therefore and make more followers of Me and My teachings.

Countless millions live their lives on planet earth with emptiness and no real direction other than personal satisfaction and immediate gratification. They are the lost that Jesus came to seek and to save. To them we say, Jesus Christ is your Creator, He made you alive and keeps you alive every breath and heartbeat. He created the world, heavens and all that is in them. Simply put, no one lives without Him. But still countless millions still live for themselves and not for their Creator and God Jesus Christ. Why? The Bible calls this SIN. SIN is a steady indifferent numbness to God or simply anything we think, say or do that does not measure up to God's standard as the Creator and Sustainer of our life.

Sin leads millions to do all the things that God their Creator hates. Things like: murder, rape, incest, pornography, adultery, fornication, abortion, drunkenness, drugs, homosexuality, lying, stealing, cheating, forgery, fraud, hatred, divorce, anger, wrath, bitterness, pride and arrogance, worship of false gods instead of the ONE TRUE GOD Jesus Christ, and anything else you and any rational person deems as evil or wrong and more importantly that God our Creator says is wrong and evil. It is because of these things that the Bible tells us that the wrath of God is coming, upon all those who commit such things.
